What Is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow opening or groove in something, often used for receiving a piece that fits into it. For example, mail is put through slots at the post office. A slot can also refer to a position in a schedule or sequence. For example, a haircut might be scheduled for the 2 p.m. slot.
